Juan’s Story of Growth

When Juan first joined Chrysalis Center’s Recovery and Empowerment Center (REC) in 2015, his anxiety was so severe that he could not remain in the space for more than a few minutes. He often missed appointments with his Community Support Specialist, Danielle, out of fear of being around others. Even leaving a voicemail felt impossible, he would call repeatedly but hang up each time before speaking.

Juan had been referred to Chrysalis Center by his psychiatrist to help him develop socialization skills, but progress at first seemed daunting. With Danielle’s patient guidance, however, Juan began to take small, intentional steps forward. Together, they set achievable goals, spending a few more minutes in the REC each week, practicing leaving messages, and building strategies to manage anxiety. Each success became a foundation for the next.

With Danielle’s guidance, Juan learned coping skills that helped him manage his anxiety levels.  Over time, he gained confidence and discovered healthy outlets to manage stress. He found grounding through art, reading, and dance, and embraced wellness goals around movement and mindful eating.

Today, Juan is thriving both personally and academically. Now in his second year in the Connecticut State Community College system, he is pursuing a degree with plans to earn his Bachelor’s. His enthusiasm for learning – especially in Biology and Nutrition – shines through as he proudly talks about the excellent grades he is earning and his study habits.

At the REC, Juan is known for his warmth, creativity, and talent. He can often be found playing piano and singing in the main space. He is a gifted musician and can play most any song he hears by ear and enjoys improvising on the piano.  Finding inspiration in the other REC members who were leading groups, Juan now leads a “Drawing with Juan” class monthly, which he describes as “art therapy.”

Reflecting on his transformation, Juan shares, “I chose to be courageous to come [to the REC].  I chose courage and wisdom over anxiety.”

Danielle beams with pride as she speaks about his growth: “He’s worked so hard.  He’s shown tremendous growth.  He’s come so far.”  Juan and Danielle’s relationship is proof of how life-changing it can be to have a caring, skilled professional supporting you along the way.

Juan’s journey is not one of quick transformation, but of steady, determined growth. Through patience and persistence, he has shown the power of commitment to change – proving that progress built one small step at a time can lead to lasting impact. If you met Juan today, it’s hard to imagine that Juan once struggled to even enter the REC.  Today, Juan is confident, engaging, and full of enthusiasm for life. He now greets you with a smile, looks you directly in the eye as he engages in lively conversation, and speaks passionately about his art, his education, and the bright future ahead of him.
